Hell's Backbone Road

Hell's Backbone Road

Hells Backbone Road 38 mi/61.2 km Escalante to 3 mi/ 4.9 km south of Boulder on UT 12 This scenic drive rises high along a narrow ridge for precipitious views of canyons and desert plateaus for as far as the eye can see. Traveling atop the cliffs surrounding Box Death-Hollow and Sand Creek Canyon, look for a bridge spanning an abrupt gap in the rock. The original bridge was constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the wake of the Great Depression. In fact, mules used to use this perilious route to go from Escalante to Boulder and the old path still exists below. The road passes two campgrounds (Posey Lake and Blue Spruce, both with drinking water and picnic tables-no toilets though) and is suitable for passenger cars. No driving when wet.
